Indian billionaires: More than you know
Reader Ananth pointed out that “India leads the country with most number of billionaires in Asia replacing Japan which held that position for over 2 decades”. Here is the original Forbes article, and a summary from Business Standard.
Globally, only the US (415), Germany (55) and Russia (53) now have more billionaires than India. But, I would argue that we are probably much closer to Russia that it seems - case in point: Hasan Ali.
The Income Tax department claims to have traced unaccounted wealth valued at Rs 35,000 crore to accounts operated by a Pune-based businessman Hasan Ali.
That’s almost $8B !! Now raise your hands if you agree with me that for every Hasan Ali that’s “found”, there are probably 3-5 others not accounted for. Where might we find them, you say. How about politics, agriculture, construction - to name a few?
