Reserve Bank of India: Handbook of Statistics on Indian Economy

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has just released the 2006-2007 edition of its Handbook of Statistics on Indian Economy. There are tons of tables, charts & statistics - organized in these sections:

  • NATIONAL INCOME, SAVING AND EMPLOYMENT
  • OUTPUT AND PRICES
  • MONEY AND BANKING
  • FINANCIAL MARKETS
  • PUBLIC FINANCES
  • TRADE AND BALANCE OF PAYMENTS
  • CURRENCY AND COINAGE
  • SOCIO-ECONOMIC INDICATORS
  • . . . plus appendices, monthly data series, etc.

Money supply growth (the highlighted column on the right = M3) remains high at ~20% p.a.:

Another interesting table is this one: Changes in financial assets/liabilities of the household sector (at current prices)

If I am interpreting it correctly, households have added only Rs 48k crores worth of assets in the form of shares & debentures during 2006-2007, and only Rs 85k crores over 2003-2007. Compare that to an increase in the Indian market capitalization from ~500k crores to over 3500k crores over the same period. It seems that retail participation in this bull run is in the single digits, measured as a percentage of net capital gains!
